Earthquake Effect
A phenomenon produced by the physical medium involving the room shaking as if there was an earthquake.
Ecstasy
An altered state of consciousness in which the person experiences great rapture and loss of self-control.
Ectoplasm
Ectoplasm is generally thought of as left over residue from paranormal activity. It is generally thought of a either a solid or vapor form. Ectoplasm is said to be made up of a viscous substance which comes from a mediums solar plexus, a combination of certain chemicals used by spirit to project solid images to its audience. It is very dangerous to disturb a medium whilst in this condition, some mediums have died from being disturbed whilst in this state.
Electrokinesis
The generation of electricity from the mind that can be used to charge watches and batteries.
Electronic Voice Projection (EVP)
Recording of spirit voices. Sections of static noise on the radio or electronic recording which some listeners believe sound like voices speaking words, and which paranormal investigators interpret as the voices of ghosts or spirits. When an EVP is recorded there are no voices present at the time of the recording. An EVP is only audible when played back.
Electro-Magnetic Field (EMF)
A field of force associated with electric charge in motion. There is a theory that a high amount of electromagnetic energy can cause poltergeist activity, but also a theory that these same high energy levels attract spirit and that it is indeed spirit that cause the strange phenomena. Electromagnetic Fields-EMF's are created naturally on the earth and also by man made objects. A high concentration of electromagnetic activity in a specific area is considered by many as a sign of paranormal activity. Prolonged exposure to high EMF's can actually cause paranoia and sometimes hallucinations. These effects can sometimes be attributed to suspected paranormal experiences.
Elemental Spirit
A spirit associated with one of the classical four elements (fire, earth, air and water). See also animism.
Elongation
Paranormal extension of the physical body, reported in some mystics and physical mediums.
Empath
Someone who shows considerable empathy, especially of the apparently psychic type.
Empathy
The ability to understand the experience or emotional state of another person or animal. Often used to refer to an apparently psychic ability to experience another person's sensations, pain or emotions. Cf. clairsentience, intuition.
Entity
A spirit or non-material entity. Often used to refer to the personality of a deceased individual. See also channeling, communication, mediumship, possession, survival.
ESP Cards
Paranormal acquisition of information. Includes clairvoyance, telepathy and precognition. See also psi.
Etheric Body
A term used by occultists, spiritualists and theosophists to refer to a supposed "double" of the person's physical body. The astral body is believed to be separable from the physical body during astral projection (out of body experience) and at death. See also Ka.
Evil Eye
Alleged ability of some people to harm others by looking at them.
Evocation
The summoning of (often evil) spirits using a magical incantation or ritual. Cf. invocation.
Exorcism
The expulsion of a spirit, ghost or demon that is possessing a person or place.
Experimental Group
A group of subjects who undergo a specific experimental procedure. Often results from this group are compared with those of a control group.
Experimental Parapsychology
Parapsychological research involving experimental methods rather than survey techniques or the investigation of spontaneous cases.
Experimenter Effect
Influence that the experimenter's personality or behaviour may have on the results of an experiment.
Extradimensional
Originating outside our normal space-time reality. Cf. extraterrestrial.
Extrasensory Perception (ESP)
Otherwise known as a "sixth sense" ESP is an ability to perceive happenings or information that is normally not perceived through any of our traditional senses
Extraterrestrial
Originating beyond planet Earth. Not normally considered to be extradimensional.
