Pets and the Paranormal
Do our pets possess some innate psychic ability that allows them to tune in to human brainwaves or even to see the future? Or... are they just more sensitive than humans to visual, aural, magnetic and other subtle environmental factors and changes, and because we are not aware of these subtleties their actions seem miraculous? It is an ongoing debate usually with the psychically minded and a lot of devoted pet owners on one side, and the more skeptical and scientifically minded on the other.
Even people who believe in an afterlife and the possibility of ghosts are often skeptical when it comes to the idea of spirit animals. They argue pets do not have souls or spirits so therefore cannot have a life in the next world. But cats, dogs, birds and other animals are made up of the same energy that humans are, and it may be as possible that this energy can survive death just as it can for people. Anyone who is close to their pets will testify to the psychic connection they share. Psychic energy and spiritual energy may all be a part of the same phenomenon, and so animals might have as much of a connection to the unseen world as we do, maybe even more.
Animals not only may appear as ghostly forms, they may also be more sensitive to the proximity of spirits. Dogs can be just as sensitive as cats when it comes to sensing the unseen. Most dogs and cats are very attuned to their owners, and quickly learn their patterns, read their body language and anticipate what is going to happen next. But there are so many stories of pets seeming to know more than their natural senses would allow that it has been the subject of study and debate for years. Are our pets’ natural senses even greater than we ever imagined? Do they have a sixth sense? Do pets have some kind of psychic connection to their owners? Can pets be so connected and attuned to their owners when they are far apart, even when there is no possible way they could be using their sense of smell or hearing?
Physician and author Dr. Larry Dossey, says there is a connection between all species, which is not limited by locality. He refers to it as a “nonlocal mind.” Consciousness is not restricted to the brain, body, time or place, therefore people and animals can have an effect on each other, and be connected, even when miles apart.
Rupert Sheldrake, author of "Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home" (Three Rivers Press, 1999), believes that animals have abilities that humans may have possessed at one time, but have somehow lost. Through his extensive research he has concluded that there are three major categories of unexplained perceptiveness by animals.
Telepathy
A psychic connection that some pets may have with their owners through connections that Sheldrake calls "morphic fields." It is this ability that enables pets to "know" when their owners are on their way home.
The Sense of Direction
This ability accounts for the "incredible journeys" some animals make to be with their owners including homing pigeons.
Premonitions
Which may explain why some animals seem to know when earthquakes and other events are about to occur.
In the section of Sheldrake's book focusing on telepathy, he asserts that this ability arises from the strong bond that develops between humans and their family pets.
Traditional scientists remain skeptical though about psychic abilities among people, let alone pets! They say much of this psychic phenomenon can be explained in other ways, through pets’ acute senses of hearing and smell, reading human body language, or noting other cues happening in their environment. Dogs and cats live mostly in a scent world, and are also very sensitive to sounds. It may be that when an owner thinks about taking her dog for a walk, this happy thought causes a slight change in her body chemistry, which the dog can smell, and associate with walks. Some who swear their dog knows when their owner is coming home, may find their pets are unable to do so when they come home in a different car.
Another simpler explanation is that owners notice their pets’ mysterious “psychic” behaviors only when related events coincide. The cat may curl up by the phone now and then, but the owner does not notice. If the cat happens to sit by the phone when “dad” calls, the owner is more likely to take note of it and think they have a psychic cat.
There is no dispute that our pets live on a sensory level that is different from our own. Though we share the same five known senses, dogs and cats take in their world mostly through scent and sound and act on instinct. We take in our world mostly through sight and act on intellect and emotion. So it is not surprising that our pets are able to clue in on things that we can not imagine could be possible. But sometimes, hard science has no explanation for petsensory perception. The debate goes on.
