Root Chakra
The "Root Chakra" is the foundation and is associated with the color of the red mandala. This chakra is the grounding force that allows us to connect to the earth energies and empower our beings. Focusing one's attention on the color of the red mandala can help bring our energetic body "down to earth" and in alignment with our physical body when we find ourselves energetically fleeting or spacing off.
This chakra is the center of physical energy and vitality, and the center of manifestations. The root chakra is located at the very bottom of the spine and governs issues around physical self-preservation. These issues include survival, security and safety, as well as primal erotic and procreational urges.
Every other chakra is downstream of it and only receives the energy that the root chakra can pass through to it. The path to health and mystical power goes right through the gender organs. To understand your root chakra, you must come to a place of peace with your sexual energy.
Throughout the ancient world in historical and mythological stories, the root chakra has been associated with dragons and snakes. Dragons is a symbol for the kundalini fire energy.
Opening the Root Chakra:
Use the Chakra Meditation that uses mudras (special hand positions) and sounds to open the chakras. To enhance the effect, the sounds are chanted to cause a resonation in your body that you can feel at the chakra area they are meant for. When the mind becomes really still, for example after a week of intensive meditation practice. We tend to open up to subtle sense impressions that normally would pass by unnoticed. One could say that intensive meditation increases awareness of mental energy.
Sit cross-legged and meditate for 15 to 30 minutes at a time, once or twice per day, while focusing on the slow clockwise movements of the corresponding color of the mandala. Envision the spinning vortex of energy at the location of the root chakra. Take 7 to 10 deep breaths, breathing in through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, then chant the sounds for approx. three times and breath.

Hand Position:
Let the tips of your thumb and index finger touch. Concentrate on the Root Chakra at the spot between the genitals and the anus. Chant the sound "LAM".
